A Beautiful Mind (2001)
Netflix Synopsis: John Forbes Nash Jr. (Russell Crowe) was a brilliant economist — when his mind was clear. But life changed forever with the revelation that he was a schizophrenic. Nash’s brilliance persisted amidst the anguish his mental illness caused for him and his wife (Jennifer Connolly), and 40 years after his diagnosis, he won the Nobel Prize for economics. Connolly’s acting and Ron Howard’s direction won Oscars, and the film was named Best Picture.
Review: A Beautiful Mind is a beautifully compelling movie and definitely a must-see. I have a son very recently diagnosed with High Functioning Autism and while it’s definitely not the same as schizophrenia, I can still appreciate this movie on an entirely different level. I know what it’s like to have to adjust your environment to accommodate a loved one who doesn’t process the world the same as everyone else. Russell Crowe is phenomenal as John Nash, I felt he was very believable in the role. Jennifer Connelly wasn’t bad but I didn’t feel she “owned the role” of Alicia, I felt any number of actresses could have done just as well. The special effects crew did a great job aging the characters and I felt the direction was also very well done. My only complaint about the movie is that it seemed to drag on much longer than was necessary.
